While Pakistan has experienced clear progress and rapid economic development in recent years, 74% of its population still lives on less than $2 a day. With a population of 160 million, Pakistan's challenge is how to address its citizens' basic needs and services on a large scale.

Acumen Fund's work in Pakistan has a strong presence in the housing sector, providing slum-dwellers with affordable legal housing and infrastructure alternatives, as well as innovative financial services that allow low income clients to improve their homes and supplement incomes.

This year, the Pakistan portfolio has grown to include investments in the health and water sectors. In health, our team is supporting a social enterprise that is providing integrated health services and e-consulting access to doctors and specialists for lower income communities. Approved investments also include a micro insurance distribution agency and an investment in drip irrigation technologies to improve incomes for rural farmers through water conservation and crop yield enhancement.

Our team in Pakistan is actively exploring further investments in water (a solid waste management company), housing (a housing development company and an affordable housing finance company) and alternative energy.
