While Pakistan has experienced clear progress and rapid economic development in recent years, 74% of its population still lives on less than $2 a day. With a population of 166 million, Pakistan's challenge is how to address its citizens' basic needs and services on a large scale.
Acumen Fund’s portfolio focuses on the housing sector, providing slum-dwellers with affordable legal housing and infrastructure alternatives, as well as innovative financial services that allow low income clients to improve their homes and supplement incomes. The Pakistan portfolio has grown to include investments in the health, water, and agriculture sectors. In health, our team is supporting a social enterprise that is providing integrated health services and e-consulting access to doctors and specialists for lower income communities. New investments include a follow on affordable housing development and management company and an agriculture investment in a dairy farming and livestock enhancement company.
Acumen Fund has been investing in Pakistan since 2002 and established a local affiliate in 2006. As of June 30, 2009, Acumen Fund Pakistan’s portfolio totaled $7.7 million in committed investments. Acumen Fund’s on-ground presence enables the team to better identify investment opportunities and provide management support. Acumen Fund Pakistan benefits from Acumen Fund’s global capabilities and networks while leveraging strong relationships with local businesses, institutions and community leaders, such as Citigroup, JS Group, Abraaj Capital, Aman Foundation, CMC, TiE and the Lahore University of Management Sciences.
