A Bottom-up Approach Toward Alleviating Poverty
In East and South Africa, Acumen Fund investments are improving the lives and health of millions by providing essential health and sanitation services and affordable housing, providing effective microfinancing and creating creating thousands of jobs.
Acumen Fund is creating access to critical services in health, water, housing and energy in East Africa.
In a region where poverty is particularly visible, Acumen Fund's investments are contributing to the mitigation of some of the current challenges of delivering services to low-income communities. For example, 58% of Kenyans live on less than $1 a day, while 19 million Tanzanians are debilitated by malaria every year, resulting in 125,000 deaths annually.
In the region, Acumen Fund has invested in sustainable, scaleable businesses that deliver affordable health, housing and water to low-income consumers. Acumen Fund investments are providing healthcare solutions to those affected by malaria and HIV/AIDS, as well as offering access to affordable clinic and pharmacy services to rural customers. In Kenya, Acumen is invested in a microfinance institution that is creating affordable, legal housing for former slum-dwellers.
Our team in Kenya is actively exploring potential investments in health (e.g., hospital services, insurance products), housing finance, water supply infrastructure and energy.
